(BEIJING, September 8) -- The third day of play in the Table Tennis events in the PKU Gymnasium on Tuesday sees the group stage matches come to a conclusion; the winners of the respective groups in each class will progress to the knock-out stage and compete for the precious medals.
The majority of the players who gained honors in Athens are still on course as are the top seeds in Beijing.
In Men's Individual Class 8, Richard Csejtey of Slovakia, the No.1 seed and Athens bronze medalist, meets Hou Ting-Sung of Chinese Taipei in the morning session of play and Francois Serignat of France in the evening. Mathieu Loicq of Belgium, the gold medalist in Greece, confronts Piotr Grudzien of Poland followed by Hu Ming-Fu of Chinese Taipei. Marc Ledoux of Belgium, the silver medalist at the Athens Paralympics, plays Ian Kent Canada and then Zeev Glikman of Israel.
In Women's Individual Class 4, Monika Sikora-Weinmann of Germany, the Athens gold medalist, plays Jung Ji-nam of the Republic of Korea. Valeria Zorzetto of Italy, the Athens silver medalist, meets ROK's Moon Sung-hye. Borislava Peric of Serbia, seeded No.1, faces Fatmeh Al-Azzam of Jordan.
In Women's Individual Class 5, China's Ren Guixiang, gold in 2004, plays Ingela Lundback of Sweden. Wei Mei-Hui of Chinese Taipei, bronze in 2004, meets Gu Gai of China. Andrea Zimmerer of Germany, the No.1 seed, opposes Zhang Bian of China.
In Men's Individual Class 4/5, Tommy Urhaug of Norway, seeded No.1, plays Peter Starl of Austria. Kim Byoung-young of the Republic of Korea, the Class 5 gold medalist in Athens, meets Peter Mihalik of Slovakia. ROK's Jung Eun-chang, the Class 5 silver medalist in Athens, confronts Salvatore Caci of Italy. Christophe Durand of France, the Class 5 bronze medalist in Athens, opposes Bai Gang of China.
In Men's Individual Class 9/10, Stanislaw Fraczyk of Austria, gold in Class 9 in 2004, meets Sebastian Powrozniak of Poland. Lu Xiaolei of China, silver in Class 9 in 2004 but who lost earlier to Olabiyi Alabi Olufemi of Nigeria, plays Yuriy Shchepanskyy of Ukraine. American Tahl Liebovitz, bronze in Class 9 in 2004, opposes Esa Miettinen of Finland. Ladislav Gaspar of Slovakia, gold in Class 10 in 2004, faces Gerben Last of Netherlands. In Women's Individual Class 3, Mateja Pintar of Slovenia, the No.1 seed and defending champion, plays Doris Mader of Austria. Stephanie Mariage of France, the silver medalist in Athens meets Alena Kanovaof Slovakia, the bronze medalist four years ago.
In Women's Individual Classes 6/7, Kelly Van Zon of Netherlands, seeded No.1, plays Katarzyna Pitry of Poland. Yulia Ovsyannikova of Russia, seeded No.2, confronts Viktoriia Safonova of Ukraine.
In Men's Individual Class 6, Daniel Arnold of Germany, No.1 seed and the reigning champion, plays Alexander Esaulov of Russia. In Men's Singles Class 7, Stephane Messi of France, the 2004 gold medalist who lost to Mitchell Seidenfeld of the United States on day two, plays Adam Jurasz of Poland; while Siedenfeld, who earlier lost to Adam Jurasz of Poland, confronts Johan Du Plooy of South Africa.
